SGI Fifth Generation 64-Bit UNIX Operating System


Since its inception in 1982, SGI has leveraged the capabilities and benefits of industry-standard UNIX® through the IRIX operating system technology. IRIX has been instrumental in enabling SGI to deliver generations of leading edge high performance computing, advanced graphics and visual computing platforms. IRIX is compliant with UNIX System V Release 4 and The Open Group's many standards including UNIX 95, Year 2000, and POSIX.

All SGI computing and visualization platforms have been characterized by extreme computing, data management and visualization capabilities. IRIX has played a strategic role in delivering these extreme capabilities towards solving some of the hardest problems in the computing markets.

Historically, IRIX was the first commercially available, mainstream UNIX operating system to support symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) capabilities. IRIX was also the first UNIX operating systems to support complete 64-bit and 32-bit environment, the first to support advanced ccNUMA scalable features and the first to support advanced realtime and graphics features.

The current release of IRIX, IRIX 6.5, represents the fifth generation UNIX operating system and is one of the most important and mature UNIX operating system releases in the industry. IRIX 6.5 is characterized by a rich set of scalability, big data management, real-time 3D visualization enhancements, and middleware features, along with an improved release process for increased robustness and stability for broader server and workstation deployment.

IRIX 6.5 will support the entire SGI desktop-to-supercomputing product line, spanning multiple generations of system architectures. Supported systems will include Indy®, Indigo^TM(R4000), Indigo2^TM, Power Indigo2^TM, Silicon Graphics Silicon Graphics® Octane®^TM, Silicon Graphics® Octane®®, Onyx®, Silicon Graphics® Power Onyx^TM, Silicon Graphics® Onyx2^TM, Challenge®, Power Challenge^TM,SGI^TM Origin^TM 200,SGI^TM Origin^TM 2000 and Cray® SGI^TM Origin 2000^TM families of desktop, graphics and scalable server product families. IRIX 6.5 is a force to be reckoned with in establishing IRIX as the UNIX operating environment of choice in the high performance technical and advanced visual computing markets.
